Mitigation development must find a work product, and mitigation writing is a naturally compelling and persuasive product...but only if used in conjunction with social justice advocacy and journalistic style. This session will introduce attendees to the ways in which mitigation writing can be journalistic writing, compelling the finder of fact to care about the story. Mitigation development that highlights the experiences of those who have been marginalized, experienced oppressive systems, and articulates meaning, context, power, history, and possibility (the Just Practice social work framework) can lead to advocacy in writing a person's mitigation story in a meaningful way.
Learners will: (1) Develop an understanding of the Just Practice framework as it lends itself to mitigation development; (2) Learn about journalistic writing as a compelling format to expand on the biopsychosocial; and (3) Practice self-reflection of their own experience and imposition of place and space on a client's story before beginning mitigation writing.

This session is designed to provide an overview of cell phone forensic reports generated in the extraction process, frequently through programs like Cellebrite or Magnet, with a goal of assisting users in navigating this data to identify information that may be useful for representation of the client.
